Let ARC Roofing Company properly clean your unsightly discolored roof and bring
back it’s original color and your homes curb appeal!
Roof algae, known as Gloeocapsa Magma, is a type of algae that thrives in humid and
warm climates and usually appears first on the North slope of the roof where shade is
prevalent and moisture tends to accumulate. When algae is present, the result is usually a
black streaked and discolored roof that is unsightly and often a violation of HOA rules.
Roof algae, once attached to a shingled roof, feeds on the dead organic matter used in the
manufacturing process of the shingle. As the fungus breaks down the asphalt shingle, the
granules protecting the surface of the shingle become loose and begin to fall off.
This can cause the roof to deteriorate prematurely and diminishes the roof's abilities to
reflect heat rays and endure nature’s punishment. If left untreated, the roof algae will
reduce the overall life of your roof, reduce your home’s curb appeal, lead to costly repair or
replacement, and can also increase your home cooling expenses.
Unfortunately, some traditional roof cleaning methods can damage the integrity of the roof,
your landscaping and even cause harm to siding, brick, windows, and gutters. All roofing
manufacturers agree that the use of high pressure, pressure washing should never be
used when cleaning roofs. Our products are biodegradable, non-corrosive and in most
cases, do not require any rinsing.
The initial removal of roof algae and moss is always more difficult then the prevention of
roof algae or moss once the roof is cleaned. A standard practice should be to clean your
roof and then apply a preventative treatment approximately every 12-24 months to keep
the algae stains from returning and discoloring your roof.
